COOKIE FAIL BECAUSE THE MANAGERS? Groupthink

business literature is full of success stories and very few on failures. Failure is an orphan, I know, but it is interesting to study to draw conclusions on how to avoid it. This has been the focus of the study by Ellen Britain Velson and Jean Van Leslie, of Center for Creative Leadership CCL , after interviewing half a hundred heads of major organizations in United States, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico , United Kingdom and Spain. The results are striking.

In general, managers in organizations fail for four types of reasons:
  • Relationships Problems
  • not Meet Targets
  • not create or manage a team
  • Be Unable To Change or modified for a change.
In the first case, relations problems are two-thirds of the reasons for failure in American leadership, Europe and Latin America. Reason: the manager employs a style very callous, manipulative and relies on the use of fear. addition, the manager who has failed is reluctant to communicate and prefer to work alone.

regard to the cause of the failure of goals, successful managers failed when environmental conditions change, question relates to the last point.

The inability to create equipment mentioned in 30% cases European 45% in American and 25% of Americans. The reason is the use of a style too aggressive and results-oriented, which allowed them to get to the place but prevented them from development. Once again, the abuse of authoritarian styles lead managers to fail, according to respondents.

Finally, the inability to adapt or change includes not know how to adapt to the boss, as relying too heavily on a single technique. This case was mentioned by two-thirds of Americans and American managers.

Ultimately, the reasons why managers fail are many and depend on the culture of each country, as evidenced by the study. However, it seems that is not due to technical reasons or knowledge, but management skills, team building and adapting to change. Once again, questions based on skills or competencies.
